Conventions and Practices
This section attempts to present the conventions adopted
by the Association over the years and observed by the
great
majority of members. It is not intended to be an exhaustive
list and may be added to or modified as circumstances require.
EMPLOYMENT OF STAFF
- A staff member of a Catholic School may make enquiries
about a post in another Catholic school without informing
his or her principal and without the need for consultation
between the Principals of the two schools.
- The position of a staff member should not be prejudiced
by his or her notifying the Principal of his or her intention
of enquiring about teaching positions elsewhere or by
asking for a reference. Staff members should be made
aware of this freedom.
- A staff member should understand clearly that he or
she is expected to give due notice (minimum of seven
weeks wholly within one term) to his or her present Principal
if he or she intends to resign.
- Principals are strongly advised to make full enquiries
before any staff appointments. A Principal receiving
an application from a staff member of another Catholic
school should indicate to that applicant that no offer
of employment will be made until contact has been made
with the present Principal of the applicant.
- Principals should ensure that the terms of an offer
of employment to any staff member employed in another
Catholic school are such as to allow the employee to
give due notice (minimum of seven weeks wholly within
one term) to his or her present employer.
Adopted 8 October 1982 (as part of the PAVCSS Code
of Ethics)
ENROLMENT OF PUPILS
- While respecting both the unity and diversity within
Catholic education, the enrolment policy in Catholic secondary
education ought be in accord with the principles laid
down in the CECV Document on Enrolment Policy.
- Within the agreed principles of Enrolment Policy for
Catholic secondary education there is the clear understanding
of the need for co-operation and collaboration among schools,
especially where the enrolment processes adopted by individual
schools impinge on those of other Catholic secondary schools.
- Enrolment Policy for Catholic secondary schools ought
always attempt to be mindful of parental desire to find
the most appropriate place of schooling for their children.
To help in this process, parents ought have access to
important information about school curriculum and the
like.
- Within the context of broad agreement on Enrolment
Policy principles, each school would have the responsibility
to develop its own specific enrolment statement.
- In the matter of Enrolment Policy, Catholic secondary
schools should always be attentive to helping parents
make the most efficacious choice for their children
and always be aware of the need to be in service to
the Church and Catholic parents.
-
Given that the PAVCSS is consulted when dates are
set for the enrolment of Year 7 students, members
are requested to work to these dates in their own
schools. Consultation with the principal of the former
school should be held when a student presents for
enrolment at a new school.
- The enrolment procedures followed by each school
should be clearly stated. When a Catholic school intends
to make changes in its pattern of enrolment or in its
fee structure that are likely to affect the enrolment
of pupils in other Catholic schools, the Principal
should initiate discussion with the Director of Catholic
Education, or his representative, and with the heads
of the school likely to be affected.
FOUR TERM YEAR
Teachers in Catholic Secondary Schools are required to
attend for the carrying out of designated duties for the
same number of days in the year as those required of teachers
in government schools by the Ministry of Education. The
number of student attendance days in Catholic secondary
schools will be as required of students in government schools
by the Ministry of Education, with the proviso that for
the purposes of staff planning and for in service, a greater
number of days may be designated as student free days.
Adopted 25 July 1986
REIMBURSEMENT OF EXPENSES
Costs associated with PAVCSS business should be spread
across schools and under normal circumstances, such costs
should be met by schools.
